What is Reflexology? Reflexology is a science that deals with the principal of reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to the glands, organs, and parts of the body. Stimulating these reflexes can help many health problems by bringing the body into balance, it is a type of preventative maintenance.
Who started Reflexology? Eunice Ingham, the mother of Reflexology, brought modern Reflexology to the West, however Reflexology has been informally practiced by cultures leading all the way back to the Egyptians who have wall paintings depicting ancient Reflexology techniques and treatments.
How does Reflexology help? With new emerging research, Reflexology is gaining traction in the medical community. One study in particular by Marc Piquemal, M.D. shows that these Reflexology points can cause a visible increase in circulation around the relating organs.
Increased circulation helps to maintain and restore balance in the body.
Can Reflexology make a condition worse? No. Reflexology helps to normalize body functions. A Reflexology session relaxes tension and increases circulation to the body for improved health and better bodily function.

Does it mean something when I have calluses on my feet? To a Reflexologist it absolutely does! Calluses are a sign of significant pressure on a certain area of the foot, most often these calluses develop on reflexes that need the most work. Often times these calluses are on the exact reflex where someone is having trouble.
Taking the callus off is the first step which can be done easily at home, from there a steady regimen of Reflexology and looking into other foot care techniques can prevent another callus from forming.
What about Bunions? Where does one begin!? Bunions are an inflammation of the big toe joint. Most often characterized by the big toes turning towards the little toes and the toe joint angling outward. This is often very painful and can lead to other foot problems.
Most people say that bunions are hereditary, however it is actually the type of foot you have that is hereditary which is prone to developing bunions combined with wearing improper shoes. Bunions don't develop over night and are often due to constant stress on the toe joint due to improper shoes or the overall condition of the arch of the foot.
Any inflammation of the joint can be decreased by working the surrounding muscles. Likewise a bunion which is diagnosed by a podiatrist or other licensed medical professional is significant to the Reflexologist because of its position on the foot and the reflexes that are in that area, often corresponding to the problems an individual is suffering from. Through treating the reflex we are able to help loosen the bunion and its effect on the body.
How many sessions will I need to feel the benefits of Reflexology? After the first session your therapist will make a recommendation of a treatment plan once your feelings and reactions have been discussed.
Reflexology is most effective on chronic issues when sessions last for a short amount of time and are spaced only a few days apart from each other, working less time and more often (ex. three half hour sessions spaced evenly in a week are more effective than a single hour and a half session once a week).
For general maintenance a Reflexology session once a month is normally recommended, however conditions to consider are: how long you've had the issue, how limiting is it to your lifestyle, is there pain involved, and how committed you are to the recovery process.
